Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles wins!
Looks like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles shell-shocked the box office this week, by taking the #1 spot from last week's winner, the Guardians of the Galaxy. This week, the Turtles brought in a total of $65.6 million at the box office, while the Guardians dropped to $42.1 million in its second week. This week's other two movie kombatants, Into the Storm and The Hundred-Foot Journey battled it our for third and fourth place, with Into the Storm scoring the bronze with a weekend box office total of $17.3 million. The Hundred-Foot Journey meanwhile ended pretty far behind with a gross of $11 million. Rounding out the top 5 is Lucy, our original Movie Kombat winner, who is still narrowly hanging in there with an added $9.5 million.
While Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was far behind Guardian's debut opening of $94 million last week, it has still managed to be one of the most successful August movie openings in history. It was uncertain how Turtles would perform considering the negative buzz it garnered leading up to its release (which I imagine influenced your predictions). However, as someone who has seen the movie, I can tell you that all of the ridicule is unwarranted, and the film does justice to the beloved TMNT series.
Into the Storm did quite well for itself, easily defeating The Hundred-Foot Journey. Although, given it's $50 million budget and weak box office performance over seas, it doesn't look like it will net much of a profit in the end. The Hundred-Foot Journey did a bit less than I expected, though in its defense, it's not the type of movie that's going to draw a lot of opening weekend crowds. Be sure to tune in later this week as The Expendables 3 dukes it out with The Giver. Let's Be Cops might even sneak its way into the mix! Stay tuned!

I've decided to do things a little differently for Movie Kombat this week by having two movie battles! Rather than having Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles battle either Into the Storm or The Hundred-Foot Journey, (which would be another massacre like last week), I'm instead matching it up against last week's box-office winner, Guardians of the Galaxy. Meanwhile, newcomers Into the Storm and The Hundred-Foot Journey will face-off against each other. It should be an exciting movie weekend and I expect both battles to be close!
Last weekend, Guardians racked up a total of $94 million, the third highest weekend gross of the year. After having a record-breaking opening for the month of August, will the Guardians still have enough momentum this weekend to hold onto the top spot against the onslaught of the Ninja Turtles? Or will their turtle power leave the current champions defeated and shell-shocked? For any of you that might not be familiar with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, they're a popular group of mutated martial arts masters who fight to protect the streets of New York City. The Guardians versus the Turtles is a fight I would love to see! Just imagine: Star Lord vs. Michaelangelo! Drax vs. Raph! Groot vs. Donatello! Gamora vs. Leonardo! Rocket vs. Splinter! They even match-up in pairs almost too perfectly! But which film will take the box office crown this week?
How will disaster film Into the Storm fare against savory sensation The Hundred-Foot Journey? It may be hard to believe, but it's been almost 20 years since the classic tornado film Twister swept across theaters. Judging from the trailers, Into the Storm looks like Twister on steroids. These tornadoes look more deadly than ever. Will The Hundred-Foot Journey be able to weather the storm? Based on the popular novel by Richard C. Morais, The Hundred-Foot Journey tells the story of an Indian family moving to France, across the street from a prestigious French restaurant. When this family attempts to open up their own restaurant, there's a clash of culture and cuisine as the two sides compete against each other. Produced by Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg, this movie may just have enough culinary flair to heat up the box office, but will it be able to hold its ground against Into the Storm? Time will soon tell, when the results are revealed this Monday!

As usual, I'm going to include my own predictions, though I hope they won't influence your own guesses (at least not too much). As I've said before, I'm no analyst or expert, although with the exception of Lucy blowing away everyone's expectations, I think my estimates have been pretty darn good! Let's see if I can continue my lucky streak this week! Here are my guesses:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - $55 million
Guardians of the Galaxy - $50 million
The Hundred-Foot Journey - $16 million
Into the Storm - $13 million
I can't wait to hear what you guys think! Thanks for playing!
