Gone Girl wins!
Thanks to strong showings from Gone Girland Annabelle, we just had the most successful week of October in box office history! Gone Girl barely beat out Annabelle for the top spot, with the two films making $37.5 million and $37.1 million, respectively. You guys voted in favor of Gone Girl 3-to-2! Good job! My own predictions were waaay off! Though as I said earlier this week, I really didn't know what to expect from these two. Gone Girl had the biggest opening ever for a David Fincher film, passing Panic Room starring Jodie Foster, which opened with $30 million back in 2002. Annabelle didn't quite open as strong as its predecessor, The Conjuring, which made $41.9 million, but it still had an incredible debut, which is even more impressive when you consider its small $6 million budget.
Next week we have 3 big films coming out with the release of Dracula Untold, The Judge, and Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. I think it's safe to say that October's hot streak is going to continue, as we have a lot of solid movie releases on the way. Maybe it can even help pull the box office out of its slump! We'll find out soon enough!

Movie Kombat returns! It's been a whole month since our last battle. I really would have liked to have seen Liam Neeson's A Walk Among the Tombstones go up against Denzel Washington's The Equalizer, but they opened a week apart. Given the box office results, I think Denzel would have walked away with a big victory. However, I think Liam's camp tried to send a message by releasing the awesome Tak3n trailer just days after The Equalizer was crowned box office king. Maybe one day they'll meet again and Neeson will take the throne, or perhaps Denzel will get all the glory! Anyway, enough about that... On to the next battle!
Gone Girl is directed by the incredibly talented David Fincher (Se7en, Fight Club, The Social Network) and stars Ben Affleck as Nick Dunne, a man who becomes suspected of killing his missing wife, Amy (Rosamund Pike). The film is getting rave reviews and should be a strong contender come Oscar time. Annabelle is about a doll that a man gives as a gift to his pregnant wife, not knowing that the doll is possessed. Soon later, terrible things begin to happen. The film is a prequel to the popular horror movie The Conjuring, and audiences should be lining up to see it this weekend. It's a battle of Batman vs. Raggedy Anne! Which movie will come out on top? Vote for your pick in the poll below! Want to try your hand at predicting how much money these two films will earn? Share your personal estimates in the comments and we'll see how well they match up with the final box office results!
This is a tough one, and I imagine these two films will be pretty close, though I don't expect a huge opening from either. I'm not feeling too confident about my own predictions here, but I'm putting my money on Annabelle to pull out the win. I'm guessing that Annabelle will make about $22 million, while Gone Girl will gross $18 million. We'll see how it goes. I'll be seeing Gone Girl tonight, but if you want me to watch Annabelle, you're going to have to make sure to vote for it in the current Pick My Flick. As always, may the best film win! Thanks for playing. I'll post the Movie Kombat results this Monday so be sure to check back soon!
