If I Stay wins!
Did anyone see this one coming? Well, 2 of you voted for If I Stay, while me and everyone else expected Sin City: A Dame to Kill For to sweep up this weekend. I think what's far more shocking to me than If I Stay winning is that Sin City only managed to pull in $6 million this weekend, debuting in 8th place at the box office. I would have never in a million years foresaw that one! That's gotta make it the biggest box office bomb of the year, and it's easily one of the most unexpected flops I can think of. I was really excited for this movie (though it seems I was one of a very small few), and thought it would easily make $20 million. To get a better perspective of just how bad of an opening this was, let's take a look at The Expendables 3, which was considered a huge failure when it debuted last week with a total of $16 million. That's over 2.5 times better than Sin City did, and to add insult to injury, both The Expendables 3 and The Giver still managed to finish ahead of Sin City in their second week. Meanwhile, If I Stay finished in 3rd place behind Guardians of the Galaxy and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with $15.7 million.
I'm almost at a loss for words over Sin City. I'm not sure what this can be attributed to, other than facing strong box office competition, and the fact that this sequel is far too long over-due (it's been about 10 years since the original film). Despite the long gap between the films, they still managed to keep most of the cast intact, although it seems they couldn't keep their hold on the audience's interest. Having seen the movie, I feel like it's just been a colossal disappointment all around. It looks like this one would have been better off just staying dead. (See what I did there? Hahahaha.)

Welcome to this week's new round of Movie Kombat! This weekend, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For is battling If I Stay! Now if this was a real fight, it would be a joke considering how much of a beast Marv is, but here at Movie Kombat, we're just making bets on which one will make the most money over the weekend. I think it's safe to assume most of you would expect this to be a blow-out, but keep in mind that teenage romance movies typically do pretty well. After all, The Fault in Our Stars killed Edge of Tomorrow at the box-office, which I doubt a whole lot of people predicted. I was aware of the buzz leading up to TFIOS, but I certainly had no idea it would man-handle Tom Cruise's action-flick like that. Like TFIOS, If I Stay is based off of a popular book, which should certainly help it perform opening weekend. Sin City: A Dame to Kill For ranked as my #5 most anticipated film of the year, so I'm incredibly excited about it, but am aware that it could very easily lose this battle. Let the battle begin!
Vote in the poll below for your pick, and if you're feeling lucky, let me know your box office estimates in the comments below!
NOTICE: I'm aware that people can always check box-office estimates before voting, but I trust that you won't do that. It takes the fun out of this whole thing and it's not like there's an actual prize for winning. I also realize it would help if I got Movie Kombat posted sooner, so I'm gonna try to get it posted closer to the beginning of the week from here on out. I hope you guys enjoy this feature. I think it's fun to do and plus it gives me some weekly practice with photo-editing. There have been some pretty cool match-ups this summer, so I'm grateful for that. Also, some of you may wonder why I didn't include When The Game Stands Tall this week, but that's because I don't really expect it to really be able compete with these two (I could end up being totally wrong about that), and because I must confess we still haven't completed the movie page for that one. Next week, I'll be pitting The November Man and As Above, So Below head-to head! Thanks for playing!
Before I forget, here are my predictions!
Sin City: A Dame to Kill For - $25 million
If I Stay - $22 million
