The 2015 5MMG Awards - Favorite Movie Poster

2/28/2016

Comments

Not many things can entice you to a movie like a great poster. Long before any trailers come out, they can effectively pique your interest in a movie, or contrarily they can shatter it altogether if poorly executed. Good or bad, they'll be synonymous with their movie forever. There's truly an art to making memorable and iconic posters, and these here are my top 5 favorites from 2015!

Favorite  Movie  Poster  Nominees:

Ant-Man

Marvel's marketing campaign for Ant-Man was hilariously brilliant, and this ant-sized teaser poster for the film perfectly demonstrates that. This simple poster shows nothing but the film's logo and a microscopic first look at Marvel's newest hero. Well played, Marvel. Well played.

The  Walk

Warning: This poster may cause some serious vertigo! This extraordinary poster gives us a beautifully illustrated and terrifying top-down perspective of Philippe Petit as he attempts to walk along a tight rope across the World Trade Center towers. I get the chills just looking at it!

In  the  Heart  of  the  Sea

Holy mother of Pearl! Look at the size of that thing! Here we have another simplistic poster that perfectly emphasizes the scale of the whale (sick rhyme, 5MMG!) that inspired Moby Dick. It's a scary and beautiful piece of art. I don't know about you, but I'm sure glad I'm not in that boat!

Jurassic  World

I love the way this poster eloquently touches on our human obsession with entertainment as well as the thrill of violence and danger. This isn't a trip to your local aquarium, but is one of many grandiose attractions featured at Jurassic World. The Great White is a nice added Jaws joke.

Star  Wars:  The  Force  Awakens

Star Wars is known for it's iconic posters, and this one is undeniably among the best of them. It's a busy poster but man if it isn't beautiful. I particularly love the contrast of Rey and Kylo Ren, as well as seeing the return of old favorite characters. It's well-balanced and just awesome!

And  the  Winner  Is...

Star  Wars:  The  Force  Awakens
Favorite  Movie  Poster

I love Star Wars, so when this poster came out, I was all over it. Heck, it even caused me to speculate my own theory about the film and write a blog post about it (here's a link if you missed it). This is legitimately a poster I wouldn't mind hanging up in my room. It has a beautiful display of colors, impressive artwork, and even a lens flare for good measure (something both J.J. Abrams and the prequel posters are known for). It's a perfect tease of so many of the film's elements, from Han and Leia, to Starkiller Base, as well as the new lead trio of Finn, Rey, and Kylo Ren. Visually it evokes a conceptual imagining of both the light side and dark side of the Force. Most importantly, it made me and so many others even more ridiculously excited to see The Force Awakens last December.
*** P.S. Any one else get a kick out of the pairing of Ant-Man and The Walk, and In The Heart of the Sea and Jurassic World's posters? It's merely a coincidence they were all nominated, but I appreciate the unintentional parallelism between them and wanted to point it out in case you missed it. ***
