While Disney is busy with their star-studded remake of The Jungle Book, Warner Bros. is making their own Jungle Book movie, titled The Jungle Book: Origins. Motion-capture master Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) will be making this live-action film in his directorial debut, and he seems to be attracting plenty of talent! Today it has been confirmed that Academy Award winners Christian Bale (The Dark Knight trilogy, American Hustle) and Cate Blanchett (The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Blue Jasmine) have joined the film, while yesterday it was revealed that Benedict Cumberbatch (Star Trek Into Darkness, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug) had also signed on.
Bale will provide the voice of the protective panther Bajeera, while Blanchett will voice the hypnotizing python Kaa. Cumberbatch, who is the voice behind The Hobbit's Lonely Mountain dragon, Smaug, will do voice-work for The Jungle Book: Origins' villainous Bengal tiger, Shere Khan. In addition to directing, Andy Serkis will also be the voice behind the beloved bear Baloo. The young actor Rohan Chand will play the title character Mowgli.
Considering Origins voice-cast, I would suspect that Serkis' film will be much darker and serious than the upcoming Disney remake, which stars Bill Murray, Christopher Walken, and Scarlett Johansson. Regardless, it'll be interesting to see how these two films match up. Both of them are managing to reel in remarkable talent. I eagerly anticipate them both! Disney's The Jungle Book is coming to theaters October 9th, 2015, while The Jungle Book: Origins will be released a year later on October 21, 2016.

In case you're wondering how Warner Bros. is making a Jungle Book film, I should clarify that Disney does not own the rights to The Jungle Book. They made their original movie back in 1967, although it is actually based on the stories by the famous writer Rudyard Kipling, which date back to the late 1800s. So while most of us associate The Jungle Book with Disney because of their classic movie, the truth is that the series itself is not their own creative property.
