Drum roll, please! At long last, we have arrived at the award you've all been waiting for... my favorite movie of the year! I should have you know that this was a tough choice that required weeks of intense, mental, war-waging brainwave debate. With all of these great films, it was difficult to pick just one singular favorite. Though I have, and I stand behind my final decision. Now, at long last, I present to you my top five favorite films of 2014, and the one film that stands above as my overall favorite of the year!

Favorite Movie of the Year Nominees:

Gone Girl

David Fincher's intense, mystery thriller transforms Gillian Flynn's novel into a cinematic masterpiece that ranks among the great director's finest work. It's a jaw-dropping affair that is brilliantly diabolical and unexpectedly insane. It left me in a state of shock and amazement that I wanted to share with everyone. With it's superb cast and perfect twists, Gone Girl is a film that must not be missed!

Edge of Tomorrow

This action-packed, alien invasion on rapid-repeat is a blast of fresh air. It's a fast, fun, and exciting adventure that's also at the same time remarkably funny. Tom Cruise kills it as Cage, evoking lots of great humor throughout his recurring failures, before finally rising to the task to kick some serious alien ass. It's strong supporting cast, great special effects, and excellent editing make this film a blast!

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Being my first encounter with the Planet of the Apes series, I approached Dawn of the Planet of the Apes with more skepticism than excitement. As it turns out, however, my doubts were completely unfounded. This blockbuster is phenomenal. It's an epic, unforgettable, action-packed adventure with a deeply compelling battle between the apes and humans, and unbelievably realistic visuals.

Birdman

Simply put, Birdman is an absolute riot. It's a hysterical, unique, and dizzying journey through the mind of actor Riggan Thomson, who finds himself facing a midlife crisis as he tries to escape the shadow of his movie superhero past. This leads him to take his talents to Broadway, where the stress of theater and fear of failure leave him teetering on the edge of sanity as he tries to direct his own play.

The Fault in Our Stars

The ill-fated lovers of The Fault in Our Stars totally melted my heart. And to think I was expecting to giggle all the way to the end of this teen romance tearjerker. Instead, TFIOS ended up being one of my favorite movies of the year, and easily placed itself among my all-time favorite romances. The story of Hazel Grade and Augustus Waters is a sweet and honest tale of love and loss that should not be missed.

These leading men are some of the industry's most respected and well-known actors. They carry the bulk of their films with style, confidence, and expertise. They are the real deal. These are the kind of guys that make all of us other guys dream about being actors ourselves. They set the stage and raise the bar with their talent and dedication. And of course, their striking good looks!

Favorite Actor Nominees:

Tom Cruise

as Major William Cage in Edge of Tomorrow

I bet you're not surprised to see Tom Cruise on this list! Though if you've seen Edge of Tomorrow, I doubt you'll find much reason to protest this worthy nomination. Love him or hate him, Tom Cruise gives one of the greatest performances of his action movie career as William Cage. He's so much fun to watch as he transitions from a cowardly, inexperienced pencil pusher into a bonafide bad ass. Tom, you still got it!

Michael Keaton

as Riggan Thomson in Birdman

There could not have been a more perfect casting for Birdman than Michael Keaton, especially when you consider that Keaton's career as Batman draws many parallels to Riggan Thomson's career as Birdman. With that said, Keaton completely owns the role, demonstrating his remarkable talent as his character teeters on the verge of a complete meltdown. He gives Riggan a spectacular edginess in his vulnerability.

Tom Hardy

as Bob Saginowski in The Drop

Tom Hardy digs deep beneath the surface in his refined performance as bartender Bob Saginowski. He plays this quiet and calm character with an intriguing level of complexity. He speaks softly, appearing mostly harmless and naively innocent, but there's much more to Bob than meets the eye. Hardy has you sympathizing with this fascinating character, and even moreso when his secrets are finally revealed.

Chris Pratt

as Peter Quill (Star-Lord) in Guardians of the Galaxy

Pratt's performance as Star-Lord has led him to instant stardom. With this one movie, he jumped straight to the A-list, and with good reason. Pratt is unforgettable as the leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy. and he danced his way into our hearts with a good dose of humor and coolness. He makes Star-Lord feel hip and modern, giving us a hero we can relate to perhaps more than any other in Marvel's extensive roster.

Brad Pitt

as Sergeant Don "Wardaddy" Collier in Fury

We meet Wardaddy as World War II is coming to an end, with the allied forces closing in on Nazi Germany. He's a character that has seen unspeakable horrors in combat and who has been molded by the war. Brad Pitt gives a sincere and tragic portrayal of a courageous man who has dedicated his life to protecting his men and fighting for his country. We sympathize with his struggle and respect his uncompromising bravery.

Now we've come to my hand-selected picks of 2014's best leading ladies. These five unbelievably talented actresses gave unforgettable performances this year. The nominees range from up-and-comers, to breakthrough stars, to legendary ladies, to the incomparable Meryl Streep. With acting like this, all five of them should be Hollywood mainstays for years to come.

Rosamund Pike

as Amy Dunne in Gone Girl

Let's be brutally honest for a moment. How many of you knew who Rosamund Pike was before Gone Girl? I, for one, had no idea, and she's been an actress for over twelve years! Now the more important question. How many of you will forget her after having seen Gone Girl? I'm guessing no one. She killed it in this role, and her character Amy Dunne will surely be haunting the hearts of men for the next dozen years.

Shailene Woodley

as Hazel Grace Lancaster in The Fault in Our Stars

I know I'm not the only one that fell head-over-heels in love with Shailene Woodley as Hazel Grace in The Fault in Our Stars. I found her to be fascinating and adorable. Her character is an unfortunate young victim of cancer, who has accepted her condition, and just wants to live a normal life. That is until Augustus Waters enters her world and shows her there is still life to be lived and love to be had in spite of her cancer.

Helen Mirren

as Madame Mallory in The Hundred-Foot Journey

Academy Award winner Helen Mirren is exquisite in The Hundred-Foot Journey. She plays the high-class, French culinary master restaurateur Madame Mallory. When the Kadam family arrives from India and opens up their own restaurant just one-hundred feet away from her own, Madame Mallory practically declares war. Helen Mirren is delightful to watch as she engages in a culinary battle with her new competition.

Meryl Streep

as The Witch in Into the Woods

What a fool I was to ever doubt the astonishing Meryl Streep. I guess I was a little put off by her atypically reserved performance in The Giver, so I dismissed the award show hype surrounding her role as The Witch in Into The Woods. Lesson learned: Never doubt the talents of Meryl Streep. She knocks this one out of the park, and gives the best singing performance in the entire film. Oh Meryl, is there anything you can't do?

Angelina Jolie

as Maleficent in Maleficent

Bringing Disney's greatest villain to life on the big screen in a live-action movie is no short task, but Angelina Jolie makes it look effortless. This is a role that that Angelina was born to play. She shines as Maleficent, flawlessly recreating Sleeping Beauty's most memorable scenes while also carving her own path through her character's expanded story. Jolie is devilishly delightful in her turn as the vengeful fairy queen.

You don't have to be the star of the show to make the greatest impact on a film. Several of my favorite supporting actors this year prove it! While they might play second fiddle to the lead actor, these guys all still brought their "A" game and helped to leave a lasting impression with their memorable characters.

Favorite Supporting Actor Nominees:

Edward Norton

as Mike Shiner in Birdman

Given Edward Norton's reputation for being difficult to work with, some think his character Mike Shiner is a parody of the actor himself. I would certainly hope not! Shiner's kind of an a-hole. Love him or hate him, I couldn't get enough him. His intense avant-garde style of acting is as comical as it is intriguing. When it comes down to it, this is a guy who, like Norton himself, is hard not to appreciate.

Ethan Hawke

as Mason Evans Sr. in Boyhood

As far as I'm concerned, Ethan Hawke is the best thing about Boyhood. He gives a really genuine and poignant performance as Mason's father, and his character proves himself to be one of the coolest movie dads ever. Him and his wife may be divorced, and he might not be around all the time, but he cares deeply about his children and makes a respectable effort to love them and instill them with important values.

Josh Brolin

as Detective Christian F. "Bigfoot" Bjornsen in Inherent Vice

Who knew Josh Brolin could be so hysterical? His stern, off-kilter, bully of a character steals the show in Inherent Vice. His serious demeanor and daunting appearance serve to hilariously contrast his oddball behavior. I don't know how Brolin was able to play this part with a straight face. Any time he was on screen, it was hard to hold back the laughter. He made Bigfoot into one of the most unforgettable characters of the year.

Antonio Banderas

as Galgo in The Expendables 3

Here's one that might surprise you! Antonio Banderas reunites with his Assassins' co-star Sylvester Stallone in The Expendables 3 and he is fantastic! With Galgo, Banderas brings a whole lot of enthusiasm to the team, but he also adds some much-needed sensitivity. He knows the horror of battle, but he doesn't let it bring him down. Instead, the fast-talking Galgo flirts with danger and playfully boosts morale.

Jon Bernthal

as Grady "Coon-Ass" Travis in Fury

With a nickname like "Coon-Ass", it's not too hard to figure that Jon Bernthal's Grady Travis is mostly a prick. Throughout most of Fury, he presents himself as being vulgar, uncouth, and largely despicable. However, Bernthal adds great depth to his character, making him someone you reluctantly sympathize with, knowing that war has taken its toll on him, and try as he might, he'll never be able to escape what he has become.

While 2014 was a year that featured primarily male-driven films, these talented women were each able to make commendable contributions with their performances. The five (correction: four) nominated actresses all impressed me with their talent.

Favorite Supporting Actress Nominees:

Noomi Rapace

as Nadia in The Drop

Nadia is the neighborhood girl who becomes the friend of bartender Bob Saginowski after he finds an abused and abandoned puppy in her garbage can one night. She also happens to be the ex-girlfriend of the crazy local thug Eric Deeds. Rapace gives a commendable performance as Nadia, who is endlessly tormented by her psychotic ex. She retains a sense of hope and a longing to escape the past, but she can't do it alone.

Kate Hudson

as Sarah Bloom in Wish I Was Here

In one touching scene, Kate Hudson's performance as Sarah Bloom earned her way into my heart and elevated her into being one of my favorte supporting actresses of the year. As the wife of struggling actor Aidan Bloom, Sarah must hold the pieces of her family together in the midst of a family crisis. To help her family, she attempts to imbue her own strength and courage into her husband's stubborn, dying father.

Rose Byrne

as Penny Moore in This Is Where I Leave You

Rose Byrne in This Is Where I Leave You is simply delightful. Playing Penny Moore, an old friend of protagonist Judd Altman, she serves as a breath of fresh air for the down-trodden Judd, whose wife is having an affair with his boss. Penny's a little bit quirky and insecure, but she's also entertaining and kind-hearted. She's immensely likeable, and Rose Byrne herself is steadily becoming a favorite actress of mine.

Emily Blunt

as Sergeant Rita Vrataski in Edge of Tomorrow

More kick ass than Tom Cruise? You've gotta be kidding me! Well, in Edge of Tomorrow, Emily Blunt's Rita Vrataski truly is. I believe her character is one of the greatest female warriors the movie industry has ever seen. Never would I have expected the usually dainty Emily Blunt to be able to pull off such a role, but she did it, and with finesse and ferocity. Blunt demonstrated her versaility and intensity as the Angel of Verdun.

Emily Blunt

as The Baker's Wife in Into the Woods

Emily Blunt does it again! Two nominees in one category. This time the nomination is for her part as The Baker's Wife in Disney's Into the Woods. We established above that she's a woman who can kick butt, but it turns out she can also sing and hold her own among the likes of Meryl Streep. Emily Blunt is both lovely and perfect mischievous in the film, playing a woman who will stop at nothing to reverse the witch's curse.

Across all of the 50 movies I've seen in 2014, these are the top five characters that stood out to me as the cream of the crop. I found them to be the most interesting characters of the year. All five of these nominees are complex, memorable, and deserving of a little extra recognition. These are characters that I'm going to pleasantly remember forever.

Favorite Character Nominees:

Riggan Thomson

as played by Michael Keaton in Birdman

We meet Riggan Thomson right before the most daring and ambitious moment of his career. He's just days away from putting on an adaptation of a Broadway play that he is directing and starring in. Riggan is nearing his breaking point as he's trying to free himself from his superhero movie past to establish himself as a respectable actor. It's mesmerizing to watch him as he tries to broaden his legacy beyond Birdman.

Christian "Big foot" Bjornsen

as played by Josh Brolin in Inherent Vice

How do I define Bigfoot? I'm not even sure where to start. He's an intimidating and brutish detective who is in many ways a giant walking contradiction. The guy seems to suffer from some sort of bully complex. Beneath his hardened exterior is a gentle, bizarre, and strangely emotional man. He steals the show in Inherent Vice, and thanks to him, I'll never be able to look at chocolate-covered bananas the same way again.

Amy Dunne

as played by Rosamund Pike in Gone Girl

Amy Dunne is not your typical housewife. She's sitting on a pretty hefty trust fund from her parents who capitalized on her childhood in the form of a book series called "Amazing Amy". She marries Nick Dunne, and things fall apart as that money begins to run out. Nick's laziness and infidelity push Amy far over the edge, revealing her to be a complicated, calculating, stone-cold psychopath who is determined to get revenge.

Bob Saginowski

as played by Tom Hardy in The Drop

Working as a bartender at his cousin's bar, Bob Saginowski is the cool and quiet type. He's friendly, and careful with his words, never drawing much attention to himself. He seems to live primarily in the shadow of his cousin Marv, a once respected tough guy.
When Marv's bar is robbed one night while serving as a drop bar, things turn awry and tensions rise, propelling Bob to stand tall and take matters into his own hands.

Wardaddy

as played by Brad Pitt in Fury

Don "Wardaddy" Collier is a character that fully embodies the devastation of war. He's seen it all on the battlefield and it's taken a heavy toll on him, but he has to keep it together for the sake of his tank crew. Hardened by war, Wardaddy knows what it takes to survive. Still, he tries to make the best out of the rare moments of peace he finds in war. He's respected, courageous, and puts the safety of his men above all else.

This one goes out to the little guys! It's for all the characters that pack a big punch even in more limited roles. They might not say much, and they might not be in their movies very long, but they still manage to leave a lasting impression on us.

Favorite One-Dimensional Character Nominees:

Birdman

as played by Benjamin Kanes in Birdman

Birdman serves as the voice in Riggan Thomson's head: the devil on his shoulder. He encompasses Riggan's temptation to suit back up in costume and make Birdman 4 with a big F you to all of his critics and naysayers. He's a trash-talking, hard-hitting, foul-mouthed character who is so awesome and hysterical that he makes you kind of wish that Riggan would just give in and unleash the Birdman within!

Groot

as voiced by Vin Diesel in Guardians of the Galaxy

Groot may be a creature of few words, but he still managed to capture our hearts. Always one to politely introduce himself, Groot won us over with his unmistakable charm and his smooth dance moves. He's kind friend and a loyal companion who makes us all want to be tree-huggers. Groot will do anything to protect his allies, and with his remarkable size and strength, he makes for one heck of a bodyguard.

Fred	as voiced by T.J. Miller in Big Hero 6

Fred's the eccentric, lovable, comic-book-obsessed slacker dude that serves as the school mascot in Big Hero 6. He's responsible for giving out the team's nicknames and for generally annoying the heck out of them. In spite of his enthusiastic personality, Fred is a cool and charming guy with his friend's best interests at heart. He's also freaking hilarious, and spins signs like nobody's business!

Nickens

as played by Terry Crews in Blended

Is there ever a time when Terry Crews isn't just completely awesome? I don't know about you guys, but I love this guy. He's only in Blended for a few minutes, but he makes the most of it and is always a joy to watch. As the singing entertainment in Sun City Resort, Nickens dances, flexes, and sings, while promoting love and harmony. His hysterical shirtless nipple dance alone is enough to put him on this list.

Quicksilver

as played by Evan Peters in X-Men: Days of Future Past

I guess you really shouldn't judge a book by its cover. This kid looks pretty ridiculous, with his bad hair and silver jacket, but he ended up being the star of one of the very best sequences in Days of Future Past. Quicksilver is cleverly and comically reimagined as a teenager in the film, and he's way cool. I think he deserves some bonus points for rocking a Pink Floyd shirt under that jacket. This kid's all right with me.

I've seen exactly 5 superhero movies this year, which makes them all nominees in this category. That might seem a little unfair, but in their defense, they're all worthy contenders. Would you like to know which one was my favorite?

Favorite Superhero Movie Nominees:

Big Hero 6

Based on the trailers, I wasn't expecting Big Hero 6 to be a full-blown superhero film. Although as it turns out, Big Hero 6 is actually a group of Marvel comic book heroes, and Disney has done a phenomenal job here in bringing them to life. I can say that this film genuinely hit me by surprise, and far exceeded my expectations. In a word, Big Hero 6 is simply adorable. It's a movie with a big imagination and a whole lot of heart.

Guardians of the Galaxy

How many casual superhero fans could have honestly said that they knew of the Guardians of the Galaxy before this summer? I'm guessing not a whole lot. After this movie, though, all that has changed forever. These guys are the new kids on the block, and they've made one heck of an impression. This group of rebel heroes gave us a burst of fresh air, and their movie is without a doubt some of Marvel's greatest work.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Michael Bay's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles seemed to be destined for disaster since the very beginning. Plagued by outrageous rumors and ridiculed without reason, this reboot was looking like a really bad idea. Well, it turns out you can't always trust the trolls of the internet, because the final product was a film that was actually quite good. As a life-long fan of TMNT, I ended up being more than satisfied with this movie.

X-Men: Days of Future Past

For whatever reason, this is the first X-Men movie I've ever seen. I had always heard bad things about the films, so I was one to heed that advice and steer clear of them altogether. Well, I'm really grateful I took a chance on Days of Future Past, because it's incredible. It's filled with superb action, outstanding special effects, and a conflict that kept me on the edge of my seat. After seeing this movie, I'm now an X-Men fan for life.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is an interesting take on the traditional superhero movie. It's more like a tactical spy thriller, with Captain America seeking out a mysterious villain known only as The Winter Soldier. Captain's moral compass is tested as the government is willing to waive basic freedoms for the sake of security. The movie itself moves fast, with lots of epic action, and plenty of surprises.

Growing up, comedy movies were always my favorite genre. I love a good laugh, but as I've gotten older, I'm not always so easily amused. These 5 movies, however, met my approval and were able to get more than a fair share of laughter out of me. I present to you now the top five funniest movies I've seen in 2014!

Favorite Comedy Nominees:

Guardians of the Galaxy

Marvel's comic book movies have a great sense of humor, and Guardians of the Galaxy is one of their funniest movies yet. It has a colorful cast of characters that keep the laughs coming. They're all funny in their own way, but even more so with how they interact with one another. It's silly, but it's all in good fun. I particularly liked how Star-Lord's goofy, carefree personality clashed with Drax's deadpan seriousness.

Birdman

The outrageous antics of Birdman make it hard not to laugh at. In the midst of Riggan's stress and struggle from trying to put on his Broadway play, we're given so many crazy and unexpected funny moments, such as Riggan having to run through New York City in nothing but his underwear. It's completely absurd in so many ways, and yet it's that ridiculousness that makes it one of the funniest movies of the year.

Dumb and Dumber To

Can you believe it's been 20 years since we first met Harry and Lloyd? The two lovable dimwits are back again and up to the same old juvenile hijinks. The best part? They still got it! Dumb and Dumber To is a loving tribute to the original comedy classic, while being a great follow-up in its own right. It doesn't rely too heavily on the jokes of old, instead feeling like a hilarious new adventure with a couple of old friends.

22 Jump Street

I was reluctant to even see 22 Jump Street, thinking it looked like another raunchy and tasteless adult comedy that would rely more on using shock factor and vulgarity than humor. Well, to some extent, that's true, but 22 Jump Street still managed to hit me by surprise by actually being legitimately clever and funny. I laughed a lot more than I ever expected, and I really enjoyed how much the movie poked fun at itself.

Inherent Vice

The comedy in Inherent Vice probably isn't for everyone. I think it can best be defined as being quirky. It's kind of unorthodox and bizarre, and yet it gives the movie such a unique style and charm. The laughs are a little sporadic, but leave a lasting impression and shape the film's memorable characters. There's just something so satisfying about the film's eye for comedy and its unapologetic, tongue-in-cheek weirdness.
