Growing up, comedy movies were always my favorite genre. I love a good laugh, but as I've gotten older, I'm not always so easily amused. These 5 movies, however, met my approval and were able to get more than a fair share of laughter out of me. I present to you now the top five funniest movies I've seen in 2014!

Guardians of the Galaxy
 | Marvel's comic book movies have a great sense of humor, and Guardians of the Galaxy is one of their funniest movies yet. It has a colorful cast of characters that keep the laughs coming. They're all funny in their own way, but even more so with how they interact with one another. It's silly, but it's all in good fun. I particularly liked how Star-Lord's goofy, carefree personality clashed with Drax's deadpan seriousness. |
Birdman
 | The outrageous antics of Birdman make it hard not to laugh at. In the midst of Riggan's stress and struggle from trying to put on his Broadway play, we're given so many crazy and unexpected funny moments, such as Riggan having to run through New York City in nothing but his underwear. It's completely absurd in so many ways, and yet it's that ridiculousness that makes it one of the funniest movies of the year. |
Dumb and Dumber To
 | Can you believe it's been 20 years since we first met Harry and Lloyd? The two lovable dimwits are back again and up to the same old juvenile hijinks. The best part? They still got it! Dumb and Dumber To is a loving tribute to the original comedy classic, while being a great follow-up in its own right. It doesn't rely too heavily on the jokes of old, instead feeling like a hilarious new adventure with a couple of old friends. |
22 Jump Street
 | I was reluctant to even see 22 Jump Street, thinking it looked like another raunchy and tasteless adult comedy that would rely more on using shock factor and vulgarity than humor. Well, to some extent, that's true, but 22 Jump Street still managed to hit me by surprise by actually being legitimately clever and funny. I laughed a lot more than I ever expected, and I really enjoyed how much the movie poked fun at itself. |
Inherent Vice
 | The comedy in Inherent Vice probably isn't for everyone. I think it can best be defined as being quirky. It's kind of unorthodox and bizarre, and yet it gives the movie such a unique style and charm. The laughs are a little sporadic, but leave a lasting impression and shape the film's memorable characters. There's just something so satisfying about the film's eye for comedy and its unapologetic, tongue-in-cheek weirdness. |

Dumb and Dumber To
Favorite Comedy
The original Dumb and Dumber is without a doubt my all-time favorite comedy movie. Does that mean I was boyishly giddy with anticipation for this long, overdue sequel? Yes! Does it mean I had foolishly high hopes for a sequel that by all accounts seemed destined to disappoint? Yes! And what do you know? Dumb and Dumber To is the award winner of my favorite comedy movie of the year! I guess you could say... I-liked-it-a-lot! Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels return after a twenty year absence and they may be over the hill, but they're still at the top of their game! These two knuckleheads are back on the road again, on a journey that's nearly as enjoyable as their last. It's a familiar foray with some favorite friends, but it does well to take its own path and not rely too much on the gags from the first film. It acknowledges the original, without ever having to depend on it, and that's where it really makes its mark. The film is crass, obnoxious, and suitably stupid, without being overly crude. The real treat of Dumb and Dumber To for me is seeing Jim Carrey comfortably retake the comedic spotlight after several lackluster film choices have sent his popularity into rapid decline. Jim Carrey, old buddy, old pal, I'd like to award you with a good job toast before I bow out! Glad to see you still got it! Any chance we'll be seeing an Ace Ventura 3 in your imminent future? Maybe?
