Not to be mistaken for Favorite Romance Movie. These are about love stories found in the movies of 2014 across all genres. A convincing love story can be tricky thing to capture on film. When done right, they can inspire us with their love and dedication and give us the kind of relationships we aspire towards in our own lives. These are the year's top 5 love stories that had me awe!
Favorite Movie Romance Nominees:
Stoick and Valka | as voiced by Gerard Butler and Cate Blanchett in How to Train Your Dragon 2 |
Was this or was this not the highlight of this lovely little animated movie? Sure, dragons and vikings and cool, but these two long lost lovers really touch the heart! The parents of Hiccup are at last reunited and celebrate their eternal love in song. Having long thought his wife Valka to be dead, Stoick's stern and stubborn demeanor quickly unravels at the sight of his beloved wife, revealing his sensitivity and big heart. |
Wendy and Horry | as played by Tina Fey and Timothy Olyphant in This Is Where I Leave You |
The tragic romance of Wendy and Horry may be the most heartbreaking story of the year, reminding us that our whole lives can be changed in an instant. Their once great relationship gradually fell apart many years ago after an accident left Horry with a severe brain injury. While he will never be the same way again, he'll always remember what he and Wendy once had, and he'll always love her no matter what. |
Manolo and Maria | as voiced by Diego Luna and Zoe Saldana in The Book of Life |
From an early age, Maria had won Manolo's heart, and since then, the young romantic has wanted nothing more than to marry her one day. However, his best friend Joaquin is also in love with Maria. While the two compete for her heart, it is Manolo that is no doubt the most deserving companion. When a twist of fate results in Maria's untimely death, Manolo sacrifices his own life to and bring her back to the land of the living. |
Augustus and Hazel | as played by Ansel Elgort and Shailene Woodley in The Fault in Our Stars |
These two young lovers are brought together by the same cruel disease that unfairly ends up pulling them apart. They are both unfortunate, young victims of cancer who know their lives will forever be haunted by its devastation, but together the two of them learn to truly appreciate the beauty of love and of life. Their time together on Earth may be short lived, but the impact of their beautiful love is everlasting. |
Nick and Amy | as played by Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike in Gone Girl |
They may not have the most desirable relationship, but there's no denying just how fascinating this twisted relationship is. Flashbacks show us the early days of Nick and Amy, five years prior to her disappearance at the onset of the film. Their unique love is a far cry from traditional Hollywood romance, but its endearing in its bitter honesty and callousness. These two crazy love birds will make you sick! |
And the Winner Is...
Augustus and Hazel
(The Fault in Our Stars)
Best Movie Romance
Any of you who have read my review of The Fault in Our Stars no doubt saw this one winning. While I enjoyed the other nominees, this really was no contest. Hazel and Augustus give us a love for the ages. Or as the film puts it, a forever within a number of days. Their love is precious and identifiable, giving us a model of romance to strive towards. Rather than making us feel sorry for them because of their terminal conditions from cancer, Augustus and Hazel make us envious of their truly remarkable love, and in turn remind us to live life to the fullest. They teach us to hold onto those we love dearly and cherish the moments we have together in this beautiful but all-too-brief existence.
