Top 5 Lists

6/25/2014

Comments

I got my first Top 5 List posted today! Check it out to see my most highly anticipated films of the year.  Some of them will be in theaters pretty soon, so it was really important for me to get this one finished before it was too late. It's already been a stellar year for movies and it looks like there's plenty more great ones to look forward to in the near future.

The cool thing about doing these Top 5 Lists is that I have so many options for what I can make my lists about. Some of my lists will probably be a little silly, but I definitely want to cover the basics as well. I hope to soon share with you who my favorite actors and directors are, what my favorite movies are, and so on.  If you have any Top 5 List suggestions, please let me know in the comments.

Truth be told, I'm a little ambivalent about doing these kind of lists because there are always going to be great candidates I haven't seen, so the scope is always somewhat limited. Plus I can be obnoxiously indecisive. Lists are almost too official for me, yet I really do have an affinity for them. It can just be rather strenuous for me to have to narrow it down to 5 choices, and then to have to put them in order? Forget about it! That could take me all day! Haha. Still, I'm gonna give it my best shot and try to have fun with it.  All my lists will have a comment box at the bottom of the page, so I hope you guys will join in and play along.

Morning Matinee

6/21/2014

Comments

Today I had my first morning matinee movie viewing as 5 Minute Movie Guy. It seems matinees are all the rage among the elderly. There were a lot more people in the theater than I expected, and everyone in there was at least 30 years older than I am. I was there to see Clint Eastwood's new movie Jersey Boys, which is primarily based in the 1960s and focuses on the musical group "The Four Seasons". While it was kind of a bummer to have to get up early, I have to admit that being surrounded by an older audience made for a pretty amusing experience. Sure, there was a little more coughing and talking out loud, but some of it was kind of cute. A few of them even sang along to the songs towards the end. The best part though was during a trailer before the movie when an older woman cried out, "What's that one called? I can't read what it says!" Hahaha! Oh man, it couldn't have been more perfect. I was holding back laughter at that one.

Since starting this website, I've primarily been watching movies on Thursday nights after work.
Rather than doing midnight showings, movie theaters are now playing movies that open Friday on Thursday night starting around 8:00 pm. It makes sense to me, and it's gotta be better for business. Unfortunately Jersey Boys wasn't playing last night, so I had to watch it this morning. There are some perks to going to the matinee, though. First of all, it's way cheaper! Ticket prices are usually about $12.50 around here, and that drops all the way down to $7 for matinee hours. Excellent! So by my calculation, going to the matinee instead will save me over a whopping $400 a YEAR! Boy howdy! You can bet your butt I'll be back for the matinee real soon! Also, as long as your movie starts before noon, you get the matinee price, so you might even get to sleep in a little bit. Sleeping in is 100% 5 Minute Movie Guy approved! And hey, maybe I'll have some more funny stories to share next time.

Oh and to those of your wondering, I chose
Jersey Boys over Think Like A Man Too for two reasons. For one, it's directed by Clint Eastwood and has Christopher Walken. That's enough to sell me on any movie. And also, I've already seen 3 comedies so far in in less than a month (A Million Ways to Die in the West, Blended, and 22 Jump Street), so I was being open to trying something different. Plus none of you voted for it in Pick My Flick, so I'm guessing you're probably not too interested in the movie anyway.

Pick My Flick Results - June 2014

6/21/2014

Comments

The results are in! Maleficent has won the first-ever Pick My Flick poll with 5 votes. Neighbors and How To Train Your Dragon 2 tied for 2nd, with 4 votes a piece. Thanks for voting!

On a side note, I don't think there's any way for me to turn these polls off. So you can technically still vote, but at this point, it won't matter anymore. Maleficent wins!

I'll admit I'm not terribly excited about this movie and I've heard a lot of mixed things about it. Hopefully it ends up getting my stamp of approval. I'm not all that familiar with the Sleeping Beauty story. I remember even as a kid it was the one Disney movie I never had any interest in. I'm not even sure if I've ever seen the whole thing. Actually, I take that back. I also was bored by the Sword in the Stone. Gosh, I was even a critic when I was 5, apparently.

Pick My Flick and Polls!

6/18/2014

Comments

Remember when I first launched the site and I promised that you guys would get to pick 1 movie a month for me to review? Well, now you can! Pick My Flick is live! It will be posted on the 1st of every month, and will allow for you to vote up until the 20th of the month. The winner at that point is the movie that I will watch and review. I hope this will be a fun and interactive activity that you will enjoy participating in. Pick My Flick can be found in the site's Features section, with all of the rules outlined. All you gotta do is go there and check out the possible choices and vote for one in the poll. I even included some information about each film, as well as a trailer if you want to get a more in-depth look. Additionally, if you want to comment on any of the choices, I added a Disqus comment box at the bottom. All the rules are detailed on the page.

Oh, and while I was in the process of making polls for Pick My Flick, I also went ahead and added review score polls to all of my current reviews. Disagree with my scores? Well, here's your chance to share your own verdict. I'll be interested to see just how much you guys agree or disagree with my scores. Thanks for reading and voting!

Scarlett Johansson's Long Lost Brother?

6/17/2014

Comments

Hey guys! I was searching around on Ebay for some movie-related shirts when I stumbled across this gem...
Picture
At first glance, it just looks like a pretty simple Captain America shirt, right? Well, let's look more closely...

Picture
Picture
I don't know about you guys, but right away I found that this shirt model had a striking resemblance to Scarlett Johansson. That's not to say he looks like a woman or she looks like a man, but I think they have very similar facial features. So I decided to look into a little bit more closely and I put this together for ya...

Picture
I think that's a pretty darn strong resemblance, but in case you're still on the fence, here's one more...

I'm not crazy, right? They totally look alike! I think I've found Scarlett Johansson's long lost brother and he's a t-shirt model for a Chinese company on Ebay! And look, he even includes Scarlett's signature  butt shot!
Picture
Anyone who's ever seen any of the Marvel movies featuring the Black Widow knows the camera guys can't seem to go long without throwing in another butt shot of Scarlett Johansson. Heck, even her break into stardom all started with a shot of her butt in the opening of Lost in Translation. I guess her butt's pretty famous. Judging from her twin model brother, it looks like it might just be in the Johansson blood.

Just as a disclaimer, I don't even want to take the blog in this direction, but it's gotta be said. Did any of you guys see Captain America: The Winter Soldier? Yeah, there was a little bit of a romance between the Captain and Black Widow, even with some flirting and kissing. It makes it more than little creepy that this guy is wearing a Captain America shirt, as if he wishes he was in the Captain's shoes... Gross! She's an attractive woman, but uhh.... gross! Good God, that's your sister, man!!

So there you have it, I have discovered Scarlett Johansson's long lost brother on Ebay and even uncovered his incestuous desires for his sister. It's all in a day's work for this movie guy! ;) Wait, there's more?!

Actually, it turns out Scarlett Johansson really does have a twin brother! They were born just three minutes apart! His name is Hunter Johansson. Here's a picture of the two of them together:
Picture
Wait a minute! This isn't the same guy! Are you kidding me? The guy on Ebay looks more like Scarlett Johansson than her own twin brother does! That's crazy! I can see something of a resemblance between Hunter and Scarlett  but nothing nearly as identical as the t-shirt model above. It's funny how that works, isn't it? I wonder who this mystery guy is. I guess I'll just leave it up to the internet to figure this out.

5 Minute Movie Guy Graduates!

6/16/2014

Comments

At long last, I have finally finished college! Yesterday, on the 1 month anniversary of 5 Minute Movie Guy, I graduated from UCLA. I am very proud of that honor and am grateful to have had the opportunity. It is something I have dreamed of accomplishing since back when I was in middle school, and it feels good knowing that I made that dream a reality. I'd like to thank all of my friends and family for their support. Yesterday was a truly wonderful and unforgettable day in my life. Now that the college chapter of my life has come to a close, I look forward to whatever possibilities await next.

Well, now that I got all of that out of the way, I have a whole lot of reviews to write! Stay tuned!

Just checking in!

I haven't made a blog in a few days so I thought I'd type one up real quick to let you guys know that I'm still alive and well and that I'm keeping busy working on the  site. Most of the work has been behind the scenes, so that's why you haven't seen it yet. I'm currently in the process of updating my home page, which has now been done, but it's going to need some tweaking. I added a slideshow, however it's being compressed too narrow by my site editor, so I'm gonna have to find out how to manually fix that. I finally saw Captain America: The Winter Soldier last night, which I will review, but I'm putting that one on the backburner since it's now pretty much out of the theaters everywhere. Instead I'm gonna be focusing my attention on this week's new releases, including Tom Cruise's Edge of Tomorrow, which I'm seeing tonight, as well as The Fault in Our Stars, which I'll see tomorrow. 3 movie nights in a row! That's a new record for me! I also haven't forgotten about the Blended review. That one is still in progress. Thanks for your patience and your support!
